HARVEST REPORT
Harvest Report
Details of our Harvest year by year
The story of Montes seems like a dream, and in truth, that's how it began, progressively becoming a reality. It was in 1987 when our two enthusiastic partners, Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, with extensive experience in the wine world, wanted to make their dreams of producing wines of a much higher quality than what was being produced in Chile come true.
Montes Harvest Report 2024
The 2023-24 season began with an intense winter of heavy rainfall: increases of between 55% and 80% compared to recent years. This has helped mitigate 15 years of drought in Chile; particularly for this season, it improved the vigour of the vineyards.
Spring was more cloudy and cooler than usual, resulting in a lower accumulation of degree days, delaying flowering and veraison by two to three weeks. This was of particularly significance in the coastal areas of Zapallar, Casablanca, and Leyda.
Until the beginning of 2024, temperatures remained cool. However, in the last week of January and the first half of February, we experienced marked heatwaves that accelerated the vines’ phenological stages. February and March saw more moderate temperatures.
Ripening was slow, resulting in harvests 10 to 15 days later than usual and grapes with lower-than-usual sugars and higher acidity. All these factors have given us fresher and more elegant wines, with beautiful colours and high fruit intensity.
This season’s conditions brought about a reduction in yields of between 10% and 15%, resulting in more concentrated wines.
The wines of 2024 are the culmination of the effort and passion of the team of viticulturists and winemakers at Montes Wines, who never cease in their quest for excellence. The year has produced wines of great expression and balance. Emblematic varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère and Chardonnay stand out because of their aromatic intensity, structure, and elegance on the palate. The red wines show exceptional depth and concentration, with soft tannins and a refreshing acidity that promises notable bottle evolution.
