INSIDE OUR MYSTICAL WINERY
The elaboration of our wines under Feng Shui, Gregorian chants and the effect of gravity.
Inaugurated in December 2004, our Apalta winery in Colchagua Valley has a 2.3 million-liter capacity (2,300,000 liters). Its design marked a major leap forward in producing Montes’s most acclaimed red wines: Montes Alpha and the iconic Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly, and Purple Angel. As the country’s most technologically advanced winery, it’s equipped to produce the very best wines Chile has to offer.
Nestled into the vineyard-carpeted slopes of the Coastal Mountains, our winery sits at their base, offering sweeping panoramic views of the vines and the breathtaking natural landscape beyond.
The design of our winery, based on the principles of Feng Shui, marked a qualitative leap in the production of our iconic wines: Montes Alpha, Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly, and Purple Angel. The goal was to ensure harmony in a positive atmosphere for both our employees and Montes wines. The elements applied to our winery are:
At the entrance to the building, there is a wooden walkway over a small lagoon, with water flowing towards the building. 'Prosperity will only come if the water, symbolising energy, flows toward the heart of the building rather than away from it.' Wood is the living element that nurtures growth and development, providing the momentum for things to follow their intended course.
At the heart of the winery stands a fountain beneath a lily-shaped skylight, symbolising the sun and moon. From this focal point, energy radiates outward, linking the building to the universe beyond.
This element is associated with concentration, introspection, and self-discovery, as well as strength, honesty, and justice. The Ford trucks parked at the main entrance of the winery incorporate this element, representing maturity and experience.
Our winery has embraced the latest winemaking technology. In line with our principle of minimising wine handling, we’ve done away with pumps.
Instead, we rely on gravity to move the grapes, crushed on the winery’s upper level, and to carry the must and young wine through each stage of production. This natural process allows us to give our wines first-class treatment, resulting in exceptional delicacy and supple tannins.
Within the architectural heart of our winery is the Montes Barrel Room, where the serene harmony of Gregorian chant accompanies the ageing of our premium wines, 365 days a year. Laid out in a semicircle like a theatrical stage, the room houses over 800 French oak barrels that protect and mature our wines to perfection.
Gregorian chants use a rhythm similar to breathing, creating harmony between the sung phase and the "singer`s" breath. For this reason, this music is known to promote meditation and introspection: the breathing slows down, and the heart rate decreases, inducing a powerful state of relaxation.
